The Essay paper carries 250 marks — more than any single GS paper — and it is the one almost nobody gets checked. Test series return it late with a number and a line of praise; GS-trained evaluators mark it as though it were a long GS answer, which is exactly how a well-informed aspirant lands at 110/250 and never learns why.
An essay fails differently. It fails for a thesis that was never stated, for three dimensions where a topper opens seven, for paragraph after paragraph of assertion where a single named thinker or datum was owed. So we mark it against those things — and we say which one cost you the marks.

Breadth without depth: eight dimensions, each a paragraph of confident assertion, no case, no thinker, no number — the commonest reason a well-planned essay stalls at 40%. And the GS answer in disguise: one dimension, usually polity or economy, elaborated at length while the ethical, philosophical, literary and personal registers go untouched. Your evaluation names which of the two you did, with the specific dimensions you left closed.
Thesis and opening, architecture, breadth of dimensions, depth and evidence, resolution, and language and craft — each scored out of ten. They sit on the same scale as your GS practice, so your weakest habit shows up across everything you write: if your conclusions restate rather than resolve, you will see it in GS-II and in the Essay paper together.
Every topic carries a memo written before your essay is read — the dimensions a top-band essay opens and the anchor that carries each one. Your essay is placed against that, not against whatever the model happens to think that morning, and a re-attempt faces the same bar so your improvement is real.

It is judged on whether it states a position and defends it across many genuinely distinct registers — historical, economic, ethical, philosophical, personal — each carried by real evidence.
